ELLIPTIC CONSTRUCTION


ELLIPTIC CONSTRUCTION adalah susunan kata-kata yang sama dapat dihilangkan atau diganti dengan auxiliary-nya.
1. Untuk menggabungkan 2 kalimat positif.
……………., and S + AUX too
……………., and So + AUX + S
Keterangan : yang dimaksud dengan auxiliary adalah kata kerja bantu yang dapat diikuti not. Misalnya : am, is, are, were, do, does, did, have, has, will, can. Must, shall …
Contoh :
The teacher comes early
The students come early
- The teacher comes early and the students do too.
The teacher comes early and so do the students
Susanti slept in the living room.
Her brother slept in the living room
- Susanti slept in the living room and her brother did too.
Susanti slept in the living room and so did her brother.

2. Untuk menggabungkan 2 kalimat negatif.
………… and Se aux + not + either
………… and neither + aux + S
Contoh :
The postman can’t drive a car.
The gardener can’t drive a car
- The postman can’t drive a car and the gardener can’t either
The postman can’t drive a car and neither did the gardener.
My sister never sees the solar eclipse
My brother never sees the solar eclipse
- My sister never see the solar eclipse and my brother never does, either.
My sister never see the solar eclipse and neither does my brother.
3. Untuk menggabungkan 2 kalimat negatif
………….. and S + Aux + not + either
………….. and neither + Aux + S

Contoh :
The writer never uses the camera
The typist ever uses the camera
- The writer never uses the camera but the typist does.
The head master gave the speech
The teacher didn’t give the speech
- The head master gave the speech but the teacher didn’t.
4. Selain menggunakan So, too, either, neither.
Kalimat Elliptic dapat dibentuk dengan langsung menghilangkan bagian-bagian yang sama.
Contoh :
My father comes from Bandung
My mother comes from Bandung
- My father and mother come from Bandung
The gardener cuts the grass
The gardener sweeps the yard
- The gardener cuts the grass and sweeps the yard.
The teacher is writing the Questions on the blackboard.
The teacher is writing the answers on the blackboard
- The teacher is writing the Questions and answers on the blackboard
Although he is 70 years old, my grand father is still active.
- Although 70 years old, my grand father is still active.
My brother is opening the gate while shouting.
Whenever the dog is hungry, it will bark loudly.
- Whenever hungry, the dog will bark loudly.
