We often hear people talking about generation gap. The name is new, but the idea is old. Young people and their parents do not understand each other. The world keep changing. It has always kept changing. During the second century A.D. a wise man said : “Bury me on my face because in a little while everything will be turned upside down.”
There are always been a gap between generations, but more people talk about it now. Old Mr. Ellis thinks he understands what has happened : “when I was a boy, I though the world was a beautiful place. My life was very pleasant. But when I was older, I learned about people were treated badly, people who did not have enough to eat. I wanted to help them, and I married a girl who wanted to help them, too. He went to meetings and talked a lot, but it did not seem to make much difference.
Our children grew up in a world at war. They did not know when the fighting would stop. They wanted their children to have nice clothes and toys. They did not want to think about the future. They thought nothing could be done about it. Now I have grandchildren, and they have their own ideas. They are trying to take the world better. They are trying to help other people. They are making people listen to them. I am proud of their generation.

Edward Silver used to be an arm officer, but he is in prison now. Every day is exactly the same day for him. It is winter now and Silver and all the other men get up at six, when it is still cold and dark. They have breakfast at six thirty. Some of the men work in the prison factory, where they make mail-bags, but Silver of ten works in the fields outside.
The men have lunch at twelve. Lunch lasts an hour and then the men go back to work again. Dinner is at six, Silver usually goes to the prison library after dinner and reads until nine thirty. The lights go out at ten.
The day is long, hard and boring and every man has a lot of time to think. They usually think about why they are there. Silver does. He always thinks about two men. One of them is called Eric Hoffman. He used to be an army officer, just like Silver. Silver knows that Hoffman has a lot of money now. The second man’s name is Aton. This is all Silver knows about him. Hoffman knows where and who Aton is, but Silver doesn’t.
Every night Silver lies in bed and thinks about Eric Hoffman and Aton. There is another thing he thinks about, too. Escaping. He wants to escape and find Hoffman, and then the other man. Silver is in prison for something he did not do.

When Tom decided to go on a holiday to England, he wrote a friend of his who was living in London and asked if he could meet him at the airport. The friend wrote back to say that he would be there. So Tom was surprised when he reached the airport to find that his friend had not turned up.

He walked around for a short while and then, because he had a slight headache, went in to the restaurant and had a cup of strong, black coffee. After that he felt much better. He bought a couple of magazine at the bookstall and went into the lounge to read them. He felt sure that his friend would come fairly soon, though he was beginning to get worried.

He had just started to read his magazine when his friend arrived with a young lady. Tom’s friend apologized for being late and explained what had happened. Apparently he had arranged to meet the young lady at six o’clock, just outside the underground station not far from where he was living. The young lady who had only traveled on the underground once before, had set out in good time but unfortunately she had got on a train going in the wrong direction. She traveled for several stops before she realized this, because the train was very crowded and she could not see the names of the stations. By the time she got to the right station, she was nearly three quarters of an hour late.
