Scott and his four companions were terribly disappointed when they got to the South Pole and found the Norwegians had beaten them in the race to be the first men ever to reach it. After planting the British flag at the people, they took a photograph of themselves before they left, and then started the 950-mile journey back.
The journey was painfully slow, and the joy and excitement had gone out of them. The sun hardly appeared, but the snow was soft, and snow storms often made it impossible to sight the stones they had set up to mark their way home. Then, to make things worse. Evans, whom they had all thought the strongest of the five, showed signs of weakening, fell into a deep hole in to he ice, and after struggling along for several days, suddenly collapsed and died.
The four who were left pushed on at the best ahead they could; they knew their strength was going and food was running short. The wind tired them out, so that each day the distance they traveled was shorter than the previous day’s. if they had warm food and dry sleeping bags, they might haveliyed, but each time they reached one of the places where they had left oil for cooking and heat, they found that there was less than they had expected. They hadn’t known that oil creeps out from tins in very low temperatures.
Captain oats had been suffering for some time from frozen feet; at night his feet swelled so large that he could scarcely put his boots on the next morning, and he walked in great pain. He was very brave. He did not complain, but he knew his slowness was making in his sleeping bag, but they refused, and helped him on a few miles, until it was time to put up the tent for another night.
The following morning, while the others were still in their sleeping bags, he said: I’m just going outside and may be gone some time, he was never seen again. He had walked out alone into the snow, hoping that his death would help his companions. It takes nothing away from his brave act that in the end it was in vain

Cavemen who roamed the earth thousands of years ago must have thought it strange that the moon had many different shapes. Sometimes it appeared as a thin white curve, sometimes as a half circle, and at other times as a huge orange disc. How must they have explained the moon’s curious behaviour? Today, of course, we know our satellite appears to have many different shapes.
Once a month the moon travels in a complete circle around the earth. And as it moves in its circle, it seems to change shape. This is because we on earth see only that section of the moon that catches the sun’s rays.
When the sun, the moon, and the earth are in a straight line-with the moon in the middle – we don’t see the moon at all. In this position, we say that the moon is new.
As the new moon begins to circle the earth , part of its surface catches the sun’s light; and the shape of a half moon begins to appear. When it moves further around to the position where the earth is between the sun and the moon, we see the full moon.
Gradually the moon becomes smaller and until we cannot see it again. This cycle takes twenty-eight days or a month.
‘If the cave men had know these simple facts which explain how and why the moon ‘changes’. They probably would have saved themselves much unhappiness. They could have enjoyed the beauty of the moon instead of fearing it every time it went out’ and uncertain to reappear.

Once there was a women who was greatly troubled by her husband, he no longer loved her. He neglected her and seemed to care little wheter she was happy or sad.
So the woman took her troubles to the local witchdoctor. She told him her story. Full of pity for herself and her sad plight. “Can you give me a charm to make him love me again” she asked anxiously.
The witchdoctor thought for a moment and replied. “ I will help you, but first you must bring me three hairs from the mane of a living lion. I must have these before I can make the charm for you”.
The woman thanked the witchdoctor and went away. When she came hear to her home she sat down on a rock and began to think. “How shall I do thing. There is a lion who comes often near to my village, it is true. But he is fierce and roars fearfully.” Then she thought again and at last she knew what she would do.
And so, rising early next morning she took a young lamb and went to the place where the lion usually strolled about. She waited anxiously. At last she saw the lion approaching. Now was the time. Quickly she rose and, leaving the lamb in the path of the lion she went home. And so it was that every day early in the morning the woman would arise and take a young lamb to the lion. Soon in the lion came to know the woman, for she was always in the same place at the same time every day with a young and tender lamb, which she brought for his pleasure. She was indeed a kind and attentive woman.
It was not long before the lion began to wag his tail each time he saw her and coming close to her he would left her stroke his head and soothe his back and each day the woman would stay quietly stroking the lion, gently and lovingly. Then one day when she knew that the lion trusted her she carefully pullied three from his happily set out for the witchdoctor’s dwelling.
“She,” she said triumphantly as she entered, “here they are!”. And she gave him the three hairs from the lion’s mane.
“How is it you have been so clever “asked the witchdoctor in amazement.
And so the woman told him the story of how she patiently won the hairs from the lion.
A smile spread over the face of the witchdoctor and, learning forward, he said.” In the same way that you have tamed the lion, so may you tame your husband.

In almost all developing countries, the lack of adequate supplied of cheap, convenient and reliable fuel is major problem. Rural communities depend largely on kerosene, wood and dung for their cooking and lighting needs. But kerosene is now priced out reach of any people and wood, exceptin heavily forested areas, is in short supply. The search for firewood oocupies a large part of the working day and has resulted in widespread deforestation.
Dung is in constant supply wherever there are farm animal and, when dried, it is convenient to store and use. But burning dung destroys its value as fertilizer, thus depriving the soil of much needed source of humus and nitrogen.
Rural areas of developing countries are also plaqued by a lack of adequate sanitation. Improper waste disposal spreads disease, contaminates water source and provides breeding grounds for diseade carrying insects.
The problems of improving environmental hygiene, conserving resources, and finding alternative sources of fuel may be unrelated. Their solutions, however, are not , as many countries experimenting with biogas technology are discovering. Biogas, a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide, is produced by the fermentation of organic matter. The process of anaerobic fermentation is a natural one. Occurring whenever living matter decomposes. By keeping the matter combustible gas be trapped and used as fuel for household lighting and cooking. The digested slurry that remains can be on the land as a soil conditioner and fertilizer.

When Anderson looked at the station clock, it was ten to two. The train was already twenty minutes late and since his own watch had proved to be five minutes fast when he got to the station, he had already been waiting nearly half an hour. He turned over in his mind the idea of going to the booking of fice and leaving a massage, but of course that would hardly do. As secretary of the local historical society, it was his duty to meet the monthly speaker give him dinner and take him rested and refreshed to the meeting.
Anderson hoped that at least, F.P. Maurice would prove to be more interesting than his articles which were, in Anderson’s opinion, more suitable for the popular press than for serious historians. However, it wasn’t always easy to find speakers, and if the man spoke reasonably well, the members wouldn’t complain to fine.
It was a warm afternoon. The station was sleepy and quiet and it was difficult to imagine that any train would ever stop there. Anderson walked up and down the flat form and wondered wheter the train would ever come.
It came at last just when Anderson had decided that he wasn’t going to wait any longer. Only two people got out – a local farmer and his dog and a young woman in jeans and scarlet sweater. Anderson cursed. Not only was the train late but F.P. Maurice had apparently missed it. There wasn’t another for two hours. He certainly wasn’t going to hang about here all that long.
He was marching angrily to the exit when he felt a little tug at his sleeve. He turned, in surprise, to see the young woman who had got off the train.
“Mr. Anderson “she said,” I hope you haven’t been waiting long I’m F.P. Maurice – I was told you’d be here to meet me.”

Some Indians of the American Southwest created towns called pueblos. They built these town at places in the desert where they found water. like the dessert groups of the Sahara, the pueblo Indians were made up of several different groups whose ways of life were not exactly the same.
The Indians of the pueblos grew as much of their food as possible. Maize (Indian corn), beans, and pumpkins were among crops usually grown at the pueblos. They hunted for meat, and they tamed animals to raise for food. Wild turkeys were one kind of animal tamed by the Pueblo Indians. They also made jewellery, pots and baskets. The jewellery, pots and baskets they made were often used to trade at the other pueblos. They traded for things needed or wanted and could not make themselves.
The Pueblo Indians built large towns. Their pueblo houses are built like apartment houses with the living areas connected together. The houses are built of stone or adobe, and are sometimes four or five storeys high. Two of these houses can be found in the pueblo in Pecos, New Mexico. One has 585 rooms and the other has 517 rooms.
Many Pueblo Indians still live and work in the desert. In new Mexico, nineteen pueblo cities are still being lived in. although the inside of the Pueblo houses have been made modern, they are much the same as they were before the United States was founded. Two buildings of one of the pueblos at Taos, New Mexico, are over eight hundred years old. They were built three hundred years before Columbus sailed to the Americas.
Like the oasis owellers of the Sahara, the Pueblo Indians sometimes traded with and were often raided by the nomads of the American desert.

The Eskimos have lived on the coasts of Baffin Island for the last 4000 years or so. Although a European, Martin Frobisher, seeking gold and a route to China, reached the Island in 1576, Europeans had little influence on the Eskimo’s way of life until the nineteenth century.
The Eskimos continued, as they had for thousands of years before, to manage to live in one of the unfriendliest parts of the world, hunting with weapons made of bone, living in houses made of snow, and wearing clothes made from skins and furs. They had neither metal nor wood, and depended entirely on the meat, fat and bone of the animals they could catch from the Artic sea or land in order to survive. They lived in small groups of several families, and the best hunter of the group was also leader.
European came increasing numbers in the second half of the 19th century to hunt whales. They also began trading with the Eskimos, giving them metal cooking pots, guns and cloth in return for skins, and adding tea, sugar and flour to the meat which had formerly been almost their only food.
The Eskimos came to rely more and more on these goods from abroad, but still did not change their way of life in any important way. They still lived in small groups in the best hunting areas, and if they were careless or unlucky their family could die of hunger.
Then in the fifties of this century, the Canadian Government suddenly became interested in its Eskimo population. Since then it has built towns near the Arctic Circle with schools and cheap wooden houses for the Eskimos, and more of them have come to live in these houses. Fewer and fewer Eskimos want to go hunting now, but in the Arctic towns there is no other kind of work for them to do.

Warman’s, the makers of office materials, had advertised for a traveling salesman. Mr. Barlow applied for the job, and soon afterwards was invited to the company’s head office to meet Mr. Snell, the sales manager. Mr. Snell asked Mr. Barlow what experience he had as a salesman.
I worked as a salesman for a brush company until six months ago. I sold brushes, dusters, tins a polish, things like that. I went from door to door selling direct to housewives. Mr. Snell then asked him why he had left the job well, to be honest, it was very hard work, Mr. Barlow replied. It meant walking sometimes six or eight miles a day. But the real reason for leaving was that I didn’t think very highly of the goods that I was selling, and that made it difficult for me to be sincere when I had to tell housewives what wonderful brushes they were. I knew perfectly well they wouldn’t last beyond a month. What’s more, the pay was rather poor. I realized after a while that I wouldn’t be able to support a family on the money I was earning.
‘I see, said Mr. Snell.’ So what did you do next?
‘For the last six months I have been a salesman in a department store’, said Mr. Barlow. ‘And do you think you could sell Warman’s office materials with a clear conscience ‘Mr. Snell asked. “Do you think you could be sincere about selling the papers , inks, copying-machines and so on that we produce here ‘Mr. Barlow said that he could, that Warman’s office materials enjoyed a very high reputation, and that in his department at Caldwell’s he sold almost nothing else. He said that he had always wanted to work for a big company with a good name, to travel all over the country selling goods to other companies, rather than to housewives on the doorstep, and he added with a smile to enjoy the money and the working conditions offered with the job for which he had applied.
‘Mr. Barlow’, said Mr. Snell, ‘do you have a clean driving licence, ‘Yes, I do’, Mr. Barlow replied. ‘Then as long as your medical examination proves to be satisfactory’. When Anderson looked at the station clock, it was ten to two. The train was already twenty minutes late and since his own watch had proved to be five minutes fast when he got to the station, he had already been waiting nearly half an hour. He turned over in his mind the idea of going to the booking of fice and leaving a massage, but of course that would hardly do. As secretary of the local historical society, it was his duty to meet the monthly speaker give him dinner and take him rested and refreshed to the meeting.
Anderson hoped that at least, F.P. Maurice would prove to be more interesting than his articles which were, in Anderson’s opinion, more suitable for the popular press than for serious historians. However, it wasn’t always easy to find speakers, and if the man spoke reasonably well, the members wouldn’t complain to fine.
It was a warm afternoon. The station was sleepy and quiet and it was difficult to imagine that any train would ever stop there. Anderson walked up and down the flat form and wondered wheter the train would ever come.
It came at last just when Anderson had decided that he wasn’t going to wait any longer. Only two people got out – a local farmer and his dog and a young woman in jeans and scarlet sweater. Anderson cursed. Not only was the train late but F.P. Maurice had apparently missed it. There wasn’t another for two hours. He certainly wasn’t going to hang about here all that long.
He was marching angrily to the exit when he felt a little tug at his sleeve. He turned, in surprise, to see the young woman who had got off the train.
“Mr. Anderson “she said,” I hope you haven’t been waiting long I’m F.P. Maurice – I was told you’d be here to meet me.”

Some Indians of the American Southwest created towns called pueblos. They built these town at places in the desert where they found water. like the dessert groups of the Sahara, the pueblo Indians were made up of several different groups whose ways of life were not exactly the same.
The Indians of the pueblos grew as much of their food as possible. Maize (Indian corn), beans, and pumpkins were among crops usually grown at the pueblos. They hunted for meat, and they tamed animals to raise for food. Wild turkeys were one kind of animal tamed by the Pueblo Indians. They also made jewellery, pots and baskets. The jewellery, pots and baskets they made were often used to trade at the other pueblos. They traded for things needed or wanted and could not make themselves.
The Pueblo Indians built large towns. Their pueblo houses are built like apartment houses with the living areas connected together. The houses are built of stone or adobe, and are sometimes four or five storeys high. Two of these houses can be found in the pueblo in Pecos, New Mexico. One has 585 rooms and the other has 517 rooms.
Many Pueblo Indians still live and work in the desert. In new Mexico, nineteen pueblo cities are still being lived in. although the inside of the Pueblo houses have been made modern, they are much the same as they were before the United States was founded. Two buildings of one of the pueblos at Taos, New Mexico, are over eight hundred years old. They were built three hundred years before Columbus sailed to the Americas.
Like the oasis owellers of the Sahara, the Pueblo Indians sometimes traded with and were often raided by the nomads of the American desert.

The Eskimos have lived on the coasts of Baffin Island for the last 4000 years or so. Although a European, Martin Frobisher, seeking gold and a route to China, reached the Island in 1576, Europeans had little influence on the Eskimo’s way of life until the nineteenth century.
The Eskimos continued, as they had for thousands of years before, to manage to live in one of the unfriendliest parts of the world, hunting with weapons made of bone, living in houses made of snow, and wearing clothes made from skins and furs. They had neither metal nor wood, and depended entirely on the meat, fat and bone of the animals they could catch from the Artic sea or land in order to survive. They lived in small groups of several families, and the best hunter of the group was also leader.
European came increasing numbers in the second half of the 19th century to hunt whales. They also began trading with the Eskimos, giving them metal cooking pots, guns and cloth in return for skins, and adding tea, sugar and flour to the meat which had formerly been almost their only food.
The Eskimos came to rely more and more on these goods from abroad, but still did not change their way of life in any important way. They still lived in small groups in the best hunting areas, and if they were careless or unlucky their family could die of hunger.
Then in the fifties of this century, the Canadian Government suddenly became interested in its Eskimo population. Since then it has built towns near the Arctic Circle with schools and cheap wooden houses for the Eskimos, and more of them have come to live in these houses. Fewer and fewer Eskimos want to go hunting now, but in the Arctic towns there is no other kind of work for them to do.

Warman’s, the makers of office materials, had advertised for a traveling salesman. Mr. Barlow applied for the job, and soon afterwards was invited to the company’s head office to meet Mr. Snell, the sales manager. Mr. Snell asked Mr. Barlow what experience he had as a salesman.
I worked as a salesman for a brush company until six months ago. I sold brushes, dusters, tins a polish, things like that. I went from door to door selling direct to housewives. Mr. Snell then asked him why he had left the job well, to be honest, it was very hard work, Mr. Barlow replied. It meant walking sometimes six or eight miles a day. But the real reason for leaving was that I didn’t think very highly of the goods that I was selling, and that made it difficult for me to be sincere when I had to tell housewives what wonderful brushes they were. I knew perfectly well they wouldn’t last beyond a month. What’s more, the pay was rather poor. I realized after a while that I wouldn’t be able to support a family on the money I was earning.
‘I see, said Mr. Snell.’ So what did you do next?
‘For the last six months I have been a salesman in a department store’, said Mr. Barlow. ‘And do you think you could sell Warman’s office materials with a clear conscience ‘Mr. Snell asked. “Do you think you could be sincere about selling the papers , inks, copying-machines and so on that we produce here ‘Mr. Barlow said that he could, that Warman’s office materials enjoyed a very high reputation, and that in his department at Caldwell’s he sold almost nothing else. We often hear people talking about generation gap. The name is new, but the idea is old. Young people and their parents do not understand each other. The world keep changing. It has always kept changing. During the second century A.D. a wise man said : “Bury me on my face because in a little while everything will be turned upside down.”
There are always been a gap between generations, but more people talk about it now. Old Mr. Ellis thinks he understands what has happened : “when I was a boy, I though the world was a beautiful place. My life was very pleasant. But when I was older, I learned about people were treated badly, people who did not have enough to eat. I wanted to help them, and I married a girl who wanted to help them, too. He went to meetings and talked a lot, but it did not seem to make much difference.
Our children grew up in a world at war. They did not know when the fighting would stop. They wanted their children to have nice clothes and toys. They did not want to think about the future. Edward Silver used to be an arm officer, but he is in prison now. Every day is exactly the same day for him. It is winter now and Silver and all the other men get up at six, when it is still cold and dark. They have breakfast at six thirty. Some of the men work in the prison factory, where they make mail-bags, but Silver of ten works in the fields outside.
The men have lunch at twelve. Lunch lasts an hour and then the men go back to work again. Dinner is at six, Silver usually goes to the prison library after dinner and reads until nine thirty. The lights go out at ten.
The day is long, hard and boring and every man has a lot of time to think. They usually think about why they are there. Silver does. He always thinks about two men. One of them is called Eric Hoffman. He used to be an army officer, just like Silver. Silver knows that Hoffman has a lot of money now. The second man’s name is Aton. This is all Silver knows about him. Hoffman knows where and who Aton is, but Silver doesn’t.

When Tom decided to go on a holiday to England, he wrote a friend of his who was living in London and asked if he could meet him at the airport. The friend wrote back to say that he would be there. So Tom was surprised when he reached the airport to find that his friend had not turned up.
He walked around for a short while and then, because he had a slight headache, went in to the restaurant and had a cup of strong, black coffee. After that he felt much better. We often hear people talking about generation gap. The name is new, but the idea is old. Young people and their parents do not understand each other. The world keep changing. It has always kept changing. During the second century A.D. a wise man said : “Bury me on my face because in a little while everything will be turned upside down.”
There are always been a gap between generations, but more people talk about it now. Old Mr. Ellis thinks he understands what has happened : “when I was a boy, I though the world was a beautiful place. My life was very pleasant. But when I was older, I learned about people were treated badly, people who did not have enough to eat. I wanted to help them, and I married a girl who wanted to help them, too. Edward Silver used to be an arm officer, but he is in prison now. Every day is exactly the same day for him. It is winter now and Silver and all the other men get up at six, when it is still cold and dark. They have breakfast at six thirty. Some of the men work in the prison factory, where they make mail-bags, but Silver of ten works in the fields outside.
The men have lunch at twelve. Lunch lasts an hour and then the men go back to work again. Dinner is at six, Silver usually goes to the prison library after dinner and reads until nine thirty. The lights go out at ten.

Bisons have not always lived in North America they are relative new comers. They belong to the Bovidae family, like domestic casttle and the wild buffalo of Africa and Asia. Bisons have not always lived in North America they are relative new comers. They belong to the Bovidae family, like domestic casttle and the wild buffalo of Africa and Asia. Woodchipping is a process used to obtain pulp and paper products from the forest. The woodchipping process begins when the tree cut down in a selected area of the forest called a couple.
Next, the top and branches of the trees are cut out and the logs are taken to the mill. At the mill, the bark of the logs is removed and the logs are taken to a chipper, which cut them into small pieces called woodchips. The woodchips are then screened to remove dirt and other impurities. At this stage, they are either exported in this form or made into pulp by chemicals and heat. In 1979, Mother Teresa won the Nobel Prize for Peace. This book tells about her life-long work with poor people and how she finally became famous.
The story begins with her childhood in Yugoslavia. She was born in 1910. at the age of 18, she decided to become a nun. The Catholic religion was very important to her. But for her, the most important part of the religion was helping other people. She especially wanted to help poor people in India.
She first worked as a school teacher in India, but her students were not poor people. So, finally she left the school. That was when she began her real life’s work. She walked the streets in Indian cities looking for people who needed help. She gave them food, clothing or medicine.
After a while, other nuns began to help her. She built hospitals and schools for the poor. She also started a special group of nuns called the Order of the Missionaries of Charity. They began to work with poor people in many countries around the world.
Important people sometimes gave Mother Teresa money or cars for her work. But the money and cars always went to the poor people. She lived very simply and worked very hard. The Nobel Prize gave her $ 100,000. she will use this money to continue her work.
This book gives many interesting details about her life and work. We may not be able to give our lives to the poor like Mother Teresa, but we can learn a lot from her.

I think the Canterbury Council should construct more Activity Centres in most local areas. Firstly, children can keep busy as well as have fun in the holidays. Secondly they learn a lot about how to do certain things. Finally, it might stop children vandalizing properties that don’t belong to them because the can go to the Activity Centres.
During the school holidays, many children who don’t have much on their minds can attend their local Activity Centre. It will keep them busy and they can also learn to do lots of different things.
Another reason is children can encourage others to attend the local Activity Centre. This way children will not get so bored because they can have lots of fun.
Moreover, it could stop children from vandalizing others’ property because they have better things to do like going to the Activity Centre and having fun and enjoying themselves.
These are the main reason why I think we should have more Activity Centres. It will be very educational and a very good experience for lots of children.

The oceanic waters of earth have a combined area of about 140 million square miles. In the Southern Hemisphere the oceans cover about 81 percent of the surface, while in the Northern Hemisphere they cover approximately 61 percent. The oceans are intercommunicating bodies of water which include their gulfs and seas.
The floor of the ocean is commonly divided into four main parts. The first is the continental shelf which slopes gently outwards from the shore of the continent. Woodchipping is a process used to obtain pulp and paper products from the forest. The woodchipping process begins when the tree cut down in a selected area of the forest called a couple.
Next, the top and branches of the trees are cut out and the logs are taken to the mill. At the mill, the bark of the logs is removed and the logs are taken to a chipper, which cut them into small pieces called woodchips. The woodchips are then screened to remove dirt and other impurities. At this stage, they are either exported in this form or made into pulp by chemicals and heat. In 1979, Mother Teresa won the Nobel Prize for Peace. This book tells about her life-long work with poor people and how she finally became famous.
The story begins with her childhood in Yugoslavia. She was born in 1910. at the age of 18, she decided to become a nun. The Catholic religion was very important to her. But for her, the most important part of the religion was helping other people. She especially wanted to help poor people in India.
She first worked as a school teacher in India, but her students were not poor people. So, finally she left the school. That was when she began her real life’s work. She walked the streets in Indian cities looking for people who needed help. She gave them food, clothing or medicine.
After a while, other nuns began to help her. She built hospitals and schools for the poor. She also started a special group of nuns called the Order of the Missionaries of Charity. They began to work with poor people in many countries around the world.
Important people sometimes gave Mother Teresa money or cars for her work. But the money and cars always went to the poor people. She lived very simply and worked very hard. The Nobel Prize gave her $ 100,000. she will use this money to continue her work.
This book gives many interesting details about her life and work. We may not be able to give our lives to the poor like Mother Teresa, but we can learn a lot from her.

During the school holidays, many children who don’t have much on their minds can attend their local Activity Centre. It will keep them busy and they can also learn to do lots of different things.
Another reason is children can encourage others to attend the local Activity Centre. This way children will not get so bored because they can have lots of fun.
Moreover, it could stop children from vandalizing others’ property because they have better things to do like going to the Activity Centre and having fun and enjoying themselves.
These are the main reason why I think we should have more Activity Centres. It will be very educational and a very good experience for lots of children.
